Performance  /  26 January 2018

The countdown begins for the XIII Winter Olympic Games to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea, from the 9th to the 25th of February 2018. In preparation for the games, here’s some more information about the Olympics:

The origin of the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games, or Olympics, are a sporting event that takes place every four years in a different location in the world, and which provides a series of competitions for each sport. The competing athletes are selected among the best in each category, and are already recognised as the best of the best in their respective discipline.

The Olympic Games were born in ancient Greece in 776 B.C., in the city of Olympia from which they take their name, and originally, they were religious as well as competitive. The baron Pierre de Coubertin was the author of the establishment of the Olympic Games of the modern age, which took place for the first time in Athens, in 1896.

The first winter edition of the Olympic Games, was officially inaugurated in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Even the Winter Olympic Games are competed every four years alternating with the summer ones, but they are a collection of sporting competitions that take place on ice or snow.

The symbols of the Olympic Games

The flag of the Olympics has five intertwined rings: each ring represents a continent, and the different colours unite the flags of all the countries of the world. Their interweaving symbolizes brotherhood, union and universality: the characteristics of the Olympic spirit.

The local organizing committees of the Olympic Games propose an Olympic emblem that represents the single edition of the Olympics and generally combines the five circles with elements that represent the city or the organizing Country.

In addition, the Olympic Games always have a mascot, usually a native animal of the area or a character that represents the culture of the Country hosting the Olympics.

The PyeongChang Olympics

This year the Winter Olympic Games will take place in PyeongChang, a county located in the North-East of South Korea crossed by the Taebaek mountains. It is the second time that South Korea is selected as host country: in 1988, the Summer Olympic Games were held in Seoul.

For this occasion an Olympic emblem that expresses the harmony expressed through the sky, the earth and man has been created, while the mascot will be Soohorang, a character inspired by the white tiger.

The PyeongChang Olympic Games are heralded as the edition with the largest number of women competing so far, and athletes will participate in 102 events scheduled in the program. There will be 15 disciplines in which competitions will take place, divided into snow, ice and sledge sports. Among these there will be new disciplines: Snowboarding Big Air, which will replace Slalom, Speed Skating Mass-Start, Curling Mixed Doubles and Alpine Skiing Team Event.
